India’s young cricketer Shreyas Iyer is unlikely to feature in the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, as concerns over his recovery continue. The middle-order batter, who has been sidelined for some time due to injury, is said to have lost nearly six kilograms and is yet to regain full match fitness.
While Iyer is reportedly comfortable with batting, questions remain over his ability to field for the full 50 overs. The BCCI is believed to be cautious about rushing him back into international cricket without complete recovery.
Earlier, there was speculation that Iyer would return through the Vijay Hazare Trophy, playing a couple of matches for Mumbai on January 3 and 6 to prove his fitness. However, officials are now keen to closely assess his endurance and overall readiness before making any selection call.
According to sources, Iyer has begun skill-based training, but his participation in the domestic tournament and subsequent selection for the New Zealand ODIs will depend entirely on medical clearance and fitness assessments.
