Football fans in India are disappointed as reports suggest that Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is unlikely to travel with Al-Nassr for their AFC Champions League 2 match against FC Goa on October 22. The Saudi club will arrive in India on Monday night, but according to Saudi newspaper Al Riyadhiah, Ronaldo will not be part of the squad. The match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda had generated huge excitement among Indian fans, with many hoping to see the legendary player live in action. However, despite several requests from FC Goa’s management, Ronaldo has decided not to make the trip. It is reported that Ronaldo’s contract with Al-Nassr gives him the option to choose which matches he plays outside Saudi Arabia. At 40, he is focusing on managing his workload and maintaining fitness for next year’s FIFA World Cup, which could be his last. Al-Nassr have already won both of their group-stage matches in the AFC Champions League 2 without Ronaldo and remain confident heading into this game. FC Goa, on the other hand, qualified for the tournament by defeating Al Seeb and now face one of the strongest teams in Asia. After the FC Goa clash, Al-Nassr will play rivals Al Ittihad in the Round of 16 of the King’s Cup on October 28. While Ronaldo’s absence is disappointing, the match still marks a historic occasion for Indian football as FC Goa host one of Asia’s top clubs.
