Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk) is set to make history by hosting the opening match of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2026–27 season in December 2026, marking the first-ever BBL game to be played outside Australia. The decision follows approvals from the BCCI and Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) after a Cricket Australia delegation inspected the venue during the IPL match between CSK and SRH on May 18, 2026.
Teams such as Perth Scorchers, Sydney Thunder, Melbourne Stars, and Melbourne Renegades are being considered for participation in the Chennai opener. The initiative aims to expand the BBL’s global reach, particularly in India, though Indian active players will not feature due to BCCI regulations. The move is seen as a major step in strengthening cricketing ties between India and Australia.
