The BCCI is reportedly planning to ensure that senior Indian players get sufficient red-ball match practice ahead of the two-Test series against New Zealand. India’s multi-format tour begins on October 22, with five T20Is and five ODIs before the Tests on November 19 and 27. With India currently in the World Test Championship race, the board is expected to encourage fit senior players to turn out in domestic first-class cricket, including the Ranji Trophy. Captain Shubman Gill and KL Rahul could be among those considered, while the workload and fitness of each player will be taken into account.
Players returning from injuries, including Akash Deep and Nitish Kumar Reddy, are also expected to be monitored closely for fitness and match readiness. Jasprit Bumrah, meanwhile, could be handled more cautiously, with the possibility of giving him first-class match practice through India A rather than the Ranji Trophy if required. The move comes amid concerns over the lack of red-ball preparation before overseas Tests. India are currently fifth in the WTC standings, while New Zealand are among the teams ahead of them, making the upcoming series an important part of India’s remaining WTC campaign.
