Australia could miss out on direct qualification for the cricket event at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics depending on New Zealand’s performance in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Reports suggest that if New Zealand reaches the semi-finals or progresses further in the tournament, it may secure the Oceania region’s automatic qualification spot, leaving Australia at risk of missing direct entry.
The development comes after the International Cricket Council (ICC) proposed a regional qualification system for the Olympic tournament. Under this format, the top-ranked teams from Asia, Oceania, Europe, and Africa will qualify automatically, making regional rankings and tournament performances crucial in determining Olympic participation.
