India suffered a major setback in the compound archery competition at the Asian Games as defending champion Vennam Jyothi Surekha was eliminated before the quarterfinals. The Telugu archer, who had won gold in the women’s compound event at the previous Games, lost to 14-year-old South Korean archer Kang Yeonseo in the pre-quarterfinals. Despite Jyothi scoring an impressive 146 points, Kang produced a perfect 150 to secure a stunning victory. Meanwhile, Telangana’s Chikita Taniparthi and Andhra Pradesh’s Ganesh Maniratnam, competing at the Asian Games for the first time, advanced to the quarterfinals in the individual compound events. Chikita defeated Chinese Taipei’s Chen Suyan in a shoot-off after their pre-quarterfinal ended 148-148, while Ganesh beat Chen Chih-lun 149-137.
India also progressed to the quarterfinals in both the men’s and women’s squash team events. The Indian women defeated Japan 2-1 in the pre-quarterfinals, with Joshna Chinappa and Tanvi Khanna securing wins, while Anahat Singh suffered a defeat. In the men’s event, India registered a convincing 3-0 victory over South Korea. Velavan Senthilkumar, Abhay Singh and Veer Chotrani each won their respective matches to take India into the last eight.
