FIFA has named Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić to officiate the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, a decision that has generated significant discussion among football fans. Argentina supporters recall that Vinčić officiated their shocking 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the only World Cup loss for Argentina in matches handled by him. His appointment has therefore raised concerns ahead of the championship clash.
Vinčić has also officiated several important Spain fixtures, including UEFA Euro and FIFA World Cup matches. During the ongoing tournament, he attracted criticism after issuing a controversial red card in the Mexico-Ecuador match. With the World Cup title at stake, FIFA is expected to closely monitor every major decision through the VAR system to ensure a fair and controversy-free final in New York.
