Story:
Babita Singh, also known as Baby, works as a sub-inspector in the Madhya Pradesh Police Department. When she returns to her hometown, she learns about the death of her childhood friend Bansi Singh. What initially appears to be a natural death gradually turns into a murder investigation. With little support from the local police, her husband or relatives, Babita decides to investigate the case herself. The story follows her journey as she tries to uncover the truth behind the murder.

Plus Points:
Nimisha Sajayan’s performance is the biggest strength of the film. She brings the character to life with convincing expressions and emotions and does complete justice to the role. Her physical transformation for the character is also commendable. Her performance in the climax is particularly impressive. Barun Sobti delivers a good performance despite having limited screen time, while Anshumaan Pushkar, Sunita Rajwar and Rajesh Kumar are also effective in their respective roles. The film also deserves credit for going beyond the murder investigation and exploring Babita’s personal life, body shaming, family issues and her struggle against the system.

Minus Points:
The crime investigation proceedings feel routine in several portions. Regular viewers of OTT crime thrillers may find some developments predictable. A few repetitive scenes in the second half affect the pace of the film. The biggest drawback is the simple climax, especially when viewers expect a major revelation connected to the murder case. The lack of strong twists during the investigation also reduces the impact. The film being available only with a Hindi audio track may also be a limitation for some viewers.

Technical Department:
Sunil Ramakrishna Borkar’s cinematography and Ajay Jayanthi’s background score effectively enhance the mood of the film. The screenplay presents the characters and their situations in a natural manner. However, the runtime of nearly two and a half hours feels slightly long, and trimming a few scenes could have made the film crisper. Director Ambika Pandit keeps the drama grounded and realistic while exploring Babita’s personal struggles, body shaming, family pressure and the lack of emotional support from her husband alongside the murder mystery.

Verdict:
Overall, ‘Babita Singh Reporting’ is a crime drama that relies more on its characters and performances than on unexpected twists. Nimisha Sajayan carries the film with a strong performance. However, the routine investigation, repetitive scenes and simple climax work against it. Viewers who enjoy grounded crime dramas can give this Amazon Prime Video release a try.
