The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has approached the Supreme Court seeking an extension of the nomination deadline for local body elections in Andhra Pradesh. Challenging a High Court ruling, the party has argued that the conclusion that the nomination period had ended should not prevent judicial intervention if democratic participation has been affected. It has submitted that election authorities can revise the schedule when circumstances disrupt the electoral process, and that election rules provide scope for such changes.
The party has also placed evidence relating to alleged irregularities and disruptions in Punganur, Kadapa and Tirupati before the Supreme Court. According to the party’s submission, affidavits from nine candidates have been presented, and it has requested directions to accept nomination papers from those who were allegedly unable to file them. The YSRCP has further sought a stay on unanimous election results until the nomination-related process is completed. The requests and allegations are the party’s claims; the court’s decision on the petition will determine the next steps.
