The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has approached the Andhra Pradesh High Court through a lunch-motion petition, alleging that its candidates contesting the Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) and Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) elections were being arrested or placed under house arrest, preventing them from filing nominations. The petition, filed by YSRCP MLC Lella Appireddy, seeks the release of detained candidates and adequate police protection to ensure they can submit their nomination papers without obstruction. The party has also requested an extension of the nomination deadline by at least 48 hours and sought arrangements at district offices and collectorates to facilitate the filing process.
The YSRCP has further alleged that candidates were being attacked, their nomination papers torn and their efforts to file papers deliberately obstructed. It has urged the court to direct the authorities to register cases against those allegedly responsible for the attacks and intimidation. The petition raises concerns about candidates’ ability to participate freely in the local body elections. Recent reports indicate that the High Court heard arguments on a related YSRCP plea concerning nomination arrangements and reserved its verdict. The specific relief granted, if any, should be confirmed from the latest court order.
