YSR Congress Party president and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has accused the ruling coalition of obstructing his party’s candidates from filing nominations for local body elections. He alleged that police were failing to intervene when TDP leaders allegedly gathered near nomination centres and snatched nomination papers. Jagan questioned the short time given for filing nominations, stating that the process began just two days after reservation details were announced, leaving candidates only three days to submit their papers. He also alleged that party candidates were facing threats, attempted attacks and cases under the pretext of preventive binding-over procedures. He raised concerns over voter lists, ward delimitation and the overall conduct of the elections.
Jagan urged the State Election Commission to ensure a fair and peaceful nomination process. He said a YSRCP delegation had met State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha, submitted a list of alleged irregularities and requested security and assistance for candidates to file their nominations without obstruction. According to Jagan, the commission gave them certain assurances. He also recalled that his party had won 98 per cent of municipalities during its tenure and called for reforms in the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner. He proposed a selection process involving the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and the Chief Justice of India. These claims reflect Jagan’s allegations; they have not been independently verified in this report, and responses from the parties concerned are not included.
