Uttarakhand minister Subodh Uniyal has defended his decision to interrupt singer Daler Mehndi during a live performance at the Kunjapuri Fair, stating that the singer should have informed the organisers if he was unwell. Explaining his actions, Uniyal claimed that Mehndi appeared to have difficulty speaking and walking and seemed to be lip-syncing rather than singing live. The minister said he initially suspected that the singer might be under the influence of a substance but later learned that he was reportedly unwell. However, no medical examination was conducted to establish the reason for the singer’s condition.
Uniyal also stated that the organisers had reportedly paid an advance of ₹35 lakh for the performance and had made hotel arrangements in advance. He maintained that he had no personal animosity towards Mehndi but believed the singer should have declined the invitation if he was not fit to perform. The incident has drawn criticism from members of the entertainment industry, with some defending the singer and questioning the decision to confront him publicly. The controversy has since raised broader questions about how event organisers and officials should respond when a performer appears unwell during a live show.
