US President Donald Trump has once again asserted that the United States is determined to acquire Greenland, stating that the move will be pursued whether or not the local population supports it. Speaking to the media at the White House, Trump claimed that if the US does not take control, rivals Russia or China could step in. He stressed that Washington does not want Russia or China as strategic neighbours in the Arctic region and admitted that while negotiations were initially preferred, tougher options may now be considered.
Trump further claimed that Russian and Chinese vessels are already operating in waters surrounding Greenland, reinforcing the need for US control from a strategic and defence standpoint. He said Greenland is vital for countering adversaries in the Arctic. To take discussions forward, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to meet leaders from Greenland and Denmark next week. Separately, Trump also highlighted energy cooperation with Venezuela, stating that increased oil extraction would benefit both Venezuelan and American citizens by boosting production and reducing fuel prices.
