The United States has officially withdrawn from the World Health Organization. The US Department of Health and Human Services stated that the WHO failed to effectively control the COVID-19 pandemic and implement necessary reforms. As part of the decision, the US has halted all forms of funding to the organization and recalled its personnel from WHO offices across the globe. Washington has also announced its withdrawal from WHO-linked technical committees and working groups.
US health officials clarified that the country would continue limited cooperation with the WHO in specific areas. Since assuming office for a second term, President Donald Trump had repeatedly warned of pulling out of the organization, and the latest announcement formalizes that stance. Meanwhile, Bloomberg reports noted that at the time of withdrawal, the United States still owes around 260 million dollars, approximately 2.38 billion rupees, in outstanding dues to the WHO.
