Donald Trump’s long-standing aspiration to receive the Nobel Peace Prize took an unexpected turn. While the Nobel Committee did not confer the award upon him, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado symbolically honored Trump by presenting her Nobel Peace Prize medal during a meeting at the White House on Thursday.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Machado said she was offering the medal as a gesture of recognition for Trump’s commitment to freedom and global peace. She described the moment as historically significant, symbolizing a return of honor from the heirs of Bolívar to the successors of Washington.
The development gained international attention as it came shortly after U.S. forces reportedly detained Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
Reacting to the meeting, Trump expressed his gratitude on Truth Social, calling Machado a courageous leader who has endured immense hardship and stating that he was honored by her gesture.
It is noteworthy that Trump had publicly claimed last year that he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize. While he did not receive it then, the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize was officially awarded to Maria Corina Machado.
