Amid escalating nationwide protests in Iran over severe economic crisis, inflation, and government repression - now in their third week with over 500 reported deaths - US President Donald Trump has warned of severe consequences, including potential military intervention, if authorities violently suppress peaceful demonstrators. Trump reiterated that the US is "locked and loaded" and stands ready to help, placing American forces on high alert and deploying naval assets toward the Mediterranean. In response, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei sharply criticized Trump, posting a satirical cartoon on social media depicting him as an arrogant, crumbling figure (resembling a sarcophagus or tyrant), warning that "arrogant powers" like Pharaoh, Nimrod, and past Iranian shahs fall at the height of their pride -"this one too will be overthrown." Khamenei dismissed protesters as "vandals" trying to please foreign powers and vowed no backing down.
The situation intensified further as Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf declared that any US military strike would make American bases, ships, and Israel "legitimate targets," with threats of preemptive action. Israel has gone on high alert, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu holding emergency security meetings and bolstering air defense systems along borders. The protests, marked by internet blackouts, mass arrests, and chants against the regime, have drawn global attention, with human rights groups reporting hundreds killed and thousands detained, raising fears of a brutal crackdown despite international warnings.
