US President Donald Trump praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi while simultaneously criticizing India’s tariff policies, sparking fresh discussions in political and trade circles. Speaking at a press conference at the White House, Trump highlighted his strong personal relationship with Modi, calling him a “great friend” and expressing admiration for the Indian leader.
Responding to a question on trade negotiations, Trump alleged that India had benefited from imposing high tariffs on the United States for many years. However, he noted that the situation has now changed, with the US gaining more from trade with India. He also expressed optimism that an India-USA trade deal could be finalized soon, following four days of discussions between representatives of both nations covering trade, customs, facilitation, non-tariff measures, and economic security cooperation.
