Donald Trump has once again made strong statements about Greenland, an island that is very important because of its natural resources and strategic location. His repeated comments about taking control of Greenland have been strongly opposed by Greenland itself, Denmark and several European countries. Trump expressed anger at Denmark, saying that NATO has warned for the last 20 years about security threats to Greenland from Russia, but Denmark failed to take proper action. Because Denmark could not protect Greenland effectively, Trump said the United States now needs to step in for security reasons.
Trump said that the US intervention is happening because “the time has come”, and he made it clear that America will try to gain control of Greenland no matter what. These comments came after Trump announced an additional 10 percent tariff on countries that did not support the US stand on Greenland. This announcement angered the United Kingdom and many European Union countries.
Reacting strongly, French President Emmanuel Macron said Europe will not bow to Trump’s threats and firmly stated that Greenland will always remain part of Denmark. He also said that the European Union is considering using its powerful trade weapon, known as the “trade bazooka”, for the first time to respond to US actions.
