Ahead of the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh next year, the Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP) are in talks on seat-sharing. The SP and the Congress will contest the upcoming UP Assembly elections together. The Congress is expected to contest 175 to 200 seats in Uttar Pradesh. Congress Uttar Pradesh in-charge Rajendra Pal Gautam said the preliminary list has been given to the SP leaders.
There are a total of 403 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh. Of these, the Congress is demanding 175 to 200 seats. In the 2022 Assembly elections, the Congress contested on its own and won only two seats. In the 2017 elections, it won seven seats. However, the results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections have given new hope to the Congress. The Samajwadi Party won 37 seats and the Congress six. The Congress leaders are demanding that they be allotted more seats (Congress Samajwadi Party Alliance).
SP leaders say that instead of just seeking more seats, it is better to look at which party candidate is likely to win in which constituency (Congress Seat Sharing). Akhilesh, however, is aiming to topple the BJP in UP. There is a possibility that the Congress will be allotted seats at a reasonable level. Top leaders of the two parties will meet soon to discuss seat sharing in detail. The Congress is hopeful that an appropriate agreement will be reached by mutual consent.
