Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has announced a series of development and welfare initiatives for Dharapuram and Madurantakam following the recent by-elections in which his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), reportedly won these constituencies. According to the report, the government moved to fulfil promises made during the election campaign after the electoral code of conduct ended. The proposed projects focus on improving drinking water supply, agriculture, education, healthcare, transport and essential infrastructure in rural and urban areas.
In Dharapuram, the government plans to implement a ₹1,439-crore joint drinking water project drawing water from the Cauvery River to serve around 1,232 rural habitations in Tiruppur district. Other proposals include 2,700 free housing plots for eligible poor families, a new fire station in Mulanur and 13,000 new drinking water connections. Desilting work covering 271 kilometres of irrigation canals is estimated to cost around ₹10 crore. Dharapuram Municipality is also set to receive projects involving water storage tanks, streetlights, solid waste management and stormwater drains. In Madurantakam, the announced initiatives include a ₹20-crore government women’s arts and science college at Acharapakkam, a check dam at Athimanam, grain storage facilities with a capacity of 20,000 metric tonnes at Attur and a state seed farm spread across 25 acres. A modern intensive care unit costing ₹10 crore is planned for the government hospital. Additional proposals include a tourism park near Madurantakam Lake, a government-run hostel for working women, a knowledge centre for young people, a weekend market, school upgrades and extra bus services for rural students and farmers.
