Tamil Nadu Assembly Opposes Delimitation Bill

The Tamil Nadu government has passed a resolution opposing the Centre’s proposed move on delimitation while supporting 33% reservation for women in legislatures. During the ongoing Assembly session, the government led by Chief Minister Vijay said the existing 543 Lok Sabha seats should continue without being redistributed on the basis of population. The resolution also called for retaining the number of parliamentary seats currently allocated to each state, arguing that population-based delimitation could disadvantage southern states that have successfully implemented population-control measures.

Chief Minister Vijay said Tamil Nadu and other southern states should not be penalised for their success in controlling population growth. He urged the Centre to retain the existing 543 Lok Sabha constituencies and make the current allocation of seats to each state permanent. At the same time, the state government backed 33% reservation for women in state legislatures. The development comes as the Centre considers steps to implement women’s reservation before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, alongside a proposal to increase the total number of Lok Sabha constituencies from 543 to 816 through delimitation.
