Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has strongly criticised the detention of Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders during protests in New Delhi, demanding the withdrawal of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Revanth said the Congress would continue its fight under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership. Drawing a parallel with the historic “Simon Go Back” movement, he said a “SIR Go Back” movement was now underway in the country. Opposition leaders have been protesting over alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls, while the Election Commission and the BJP have denied allegations of wrongdoing.
Reacting to Rahul Gandhi’s detention, Revanth Reddy alleged that it reflected the Modi government’s intolerance towards the opposition. He accused the BJP-led government of earlier using central investigative agencies such as the ED and CBI against political opponents and alleged that the Election Commission was now also being used for political purposes. Revanth further claimed that crores of voters had been removed from electoral rolls and said the Congress would continue its protest seeking electoral accountability and protection of voting rights. These allegations are part of the opposition’s political campaign and have been rejected by the Election Commission and the BJP.
