The Congress high command has initiated the process of finalizing candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections from Karnataka. With elections scheduled for the 18th of this month, several aspirants are actively lobbying the party leadership. Given Congress’s strength of 136 MLAs in the Karnataka Assembly, the party is expected to secure at least three Rajya Sabha seats.
According to party sources, Andhra Pradesh PCC chief YS Sharmila’s name is also under consideration. She is said to have recently met Rahul Gandhi and discussed the matter. With AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge’s Rajya Sabha term ending, his re-nomination is almost certain. Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reportedly declined a Rajya Sabha offer. Meanwhile, the leadership is also considering allocating seats to senior leaders who may not find space in the new state cabinet, while Siddaramaiah’s wife Parvathi is also reportedly being considered for a seat.
