A leaked diplomatic document has reignited political controversy in Pakistan by suggesting possible foreign involvement in the removal of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Investigative media outlet ‘Drop Site’ recently published a classified document referred to as the “Cipher,” identified as “Cable I-0678.” According to the report, a crucial meeting allegedly took place in Washington between former Pakistani ambassador Asad Majeed Khan and senior US State Department official Donald Lu before Imran Khan lost the no-confidence vote in April 2022.
The leaked document reportedly indicates discussions suggesting that Pakistan-US relations would improve if Imran Khan was removed from power. Imran Khan had repeatedly claimed that foreign powers targeted his government because of his independent foreign policy stance and refusal to fully align with the US on issues involving Russia and China. Following the leak, Khan’s PTI party and supporters believe the document strengthens their long-standing allegations of international interference in Pakistan’s political developments.
