Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement will begin soon. He stated that Hamas still needs to hand over the body of one more hostage, and once that is completed, the next phase of the agreement will move forward.
The second phase is expected to include key measures such as:
Disarming Hamas
Demilitarizing Gaza
Deployment of international forces
Formation of an international governing board led by U.S. President Donald Trump to oversee Palestinian administration
Netanyahu made these remarks during his meeting with visiting German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Sunday.
Addressing concerns that the second phase may be “impossible,” Netanyahu emphasized that the agreement even includes a third phase, aimed at completely eliminating terrorism from Gaza.
“Many say this too is impossible. But it happened in Germany. It happened in Japan. It happened in the Gulf nations. And it will happen in Gaza as well. But for that, Hamas must be destroyed,” Netanyahu asserted.
