The issue of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s foreign visits has once again triggered a political controversy after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) shared a video on X, claiming that he was travelling to Vietnam. The development came as opposition parties were protesting and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Sharing the video, the BJP made sarcastic remarks suggesting that Rahul was tired of spreading what it described as false claims and had decided to spend a few days in Vietnam. BJP spokesperson RP Singh also criticised the Congress leader’s foreign trips, claiming that Rahul had gone on a two-month vacation after his campaign in Bihar and suggesting that he might have travelled to Vietnam again. Another BJP leader, Shazia, accused Rahul of avoiding work and questioned his commitment, alleging that he had resumed travelling abroad after spending less than two weeks working.
The Congress strongly rejected the BJP’s criticism, arguing that Rahul Gandhi’s foreign visits were being unnecessarily turned into a political controversy. Party representatives questioned why the Leader of the Opposition should be criticised for travelling abroad when other politicians also undertake international visits. The Congress said Rahul has several responsibilities in his role as opposition leader and that his overseas engagements include interacting with students at Yale University, meeting intellectuals in London and participating in discussions on various issues. The party also pointed out that he gives media interviews during such visits. The exchange has reignited the political tussle between the BJP and the Congress over Rahul’s travel schedule, with both sides trading accusations. However, the available information does not independently establish whether the video shared by the BJP confirms a current trip to Vietnam.
