Telangana may soon witness another by-election as strong speculation grows around Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender’s possible resignation. The Speaker is currently reviewing disqualification petitions filed against ten MLAs who won on BRS tickets but later joined the Congress. Notices were issued to all of them; however, Danam Nagender and Kadiyam Srihari have not submitted their explanations yet.
This led to the Speaker issuing fresh notices, directing them to immediately file their affidavits. The Supreme Court also asked for the disqualification cases to be settled within four weeks, accelerating the entire process.
Political circles believe Nagender might avoid giving a formal explanation to prevent complications in the ensuing inquiry. Instead, he is reportedly considering resigning and recontesting the seat, especially after Congress secured a massive victory in the recent Jubilee Hills by-poll. Congress leaders feel the party has strong support in Greater Hyderabad, making a Khairatabad win easier in a by-election.
Nagender reportedly met senior AICC leaders in Delhi to discuss the political scenario, his resignation plan, and the possibility of a ministerial berth if he wins again. His close aides claim he is preparing to announce his decision soon.
Danam’s political career has seen multiple shifts from serving as MLA in Asifnagar, to joining the TDP, returning to Congress, and later winning from Khairatabad on a TRS/BRS ticket. His next move is now a major point of discussion in Telangana politics.
