Owaisi Questions Legality of EC Decisions Amid Reports of Differences Over SIR

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has questioned the legal standing of Election Commission decisions amid reports that two of its three commissioners had raised objections over aspects of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. In a post on X on September 23, Owaisi asked whether decisions taken in the name of the Commission could be considered legally valid if a majority of its members were allegedly unaware of them. He also claimed that the SIR process had created difficulties for poorer citizens who may not possess the documents required during verification.

Owaisi’s remarks came after a report that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections on several occasions over issues linked to voter registration, deletion and restoration of names, changes to Form 6 and the handling of electoral-roll data. The Election Commission has rejected the suggestion of an internal breakdown, saying queries and differing views during the draft stage are part of its normal administrative process. The Commission has maintained that all final decisions, including those concerning SIR, were taken unanimously and carry full legal sanction.
