The Central government is considering the introduction of a graded driving licence system to promote responsible driving and reduce road accidents. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced the proposal while addressing the CII National Conclave on Road Safety held in New Delhi. He said the primary objective of the new framework is to curb traffic violations and strengthen road safety enforcement.
Under the proposed system, drivers will lose points for traffic violations. If the total points fall below a prescribed limit, the driving licence may be suspended for six months or even cancelled, Gadkari stated. He added that the government plans to roll out this policy soon to enhance overall road discipline in the country.
