A viral exchange between Norwegian journalist Helle Lyng Svendsen and the Indian Embassy in Norway during Narendra Modi’s visit to Oslo has triggered a debate on press freedom and media access. The journalist shared a video on social media showing PM Modi leaving the stage after a joint appearance with Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre without taking questions from reporters.
In her post, Helle Lyng Svendsen highlighted Norway’s top position in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index while mentioning India’s ranking in the latest RSF report. The Indian Embassy in Norway later responded publicly, inviting her to attend an official press briefing in Oslo. The incident quickly went viral online, with supporters defending diplomatic scheduling protocols while critics raised concerns over limited unscripted media interactions during the Prime Minister’s visits.
