Reservations Finalised for Municipal Elections in Telangana; Polls Likely Next Month!

The Telangana government has finalised reservations for the upcoming municipal elections in the state. Reservations have been determined not only for wards but also for Chairperson and Mayor posts, covering SC, ST, BC, and Women categories. As per the orders issued by Municipal Administration Department Secretary T.K. Sridevi (GO No.14), 38 Chairperson posts and 3 Mayor posts, accounting for 34 percent, have been reserved for the Backward Classes. Overall, 50 percent of seats across all categories have been reserved for women.

The reservations have been notified based on the 2011 Census data, Dedicated Commission recommendations for BCs, and population proportion for SC and ST categories, in accordance with Sections 7, 28, and 29 of the Telangana Municipal Act, 2019. The government has instructed the State Election Commission, district collectors, and municipal commissioners to conduct elections in line with this GO. With the reservation process completed, political circles believe that the announcement of municipal elections is imminent, with polls expected next month.
