Mahua Moitra intensified her criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi following the controversy involving Norwegian journalist Helle Lyng Svends during Modi’s Norway visit. In a series of posts on X, the TMC leader alleged that pro-government social media supporters were targeting the journalist online after she questioned why the Prime Minister did not take questions from the media during a joint appearance in Oslo. Moitra stated that the incident reflected poorly on India’s democratic image and thanked the journalist for drawing global attention to the issue.
The controversy erupted after Helle Lyng Svends shared a viral video showing PM Modi leaving the stage without interacting with reporters. The journalist also highlighted Norway’s higher position in the World Press Freedom Index compared to India’s ranking. The incident triggered sharp political reactions online, with opposition parties backing the journalist’s remarks while BJP supporters accused critics of attempting to tarnish India’s image on the international stage.
