A key announcement was made on Friday regarding the Jubilee Hills by-election, which people across the Telugu states are following with great interest. Maganti Sunitha, the wife of the late party leader Maganti Gopinath, has been selected as the BRS opposition candidate. Accordingly, BRS chief KCR officially announced Sunitha’s candidature on Friday. Although there had been speculation for many days that Sunitha would get the ticket… the official announcement on Friday has confirmed it.
Maganti Gopinath, as MLA of Jubilee Hills, won consecutively three times, creating a record as a hat-trick MLA. He won in 2014 as a TDP candidate, and due to changing political circumstances later, he left TDP and joined BRS. Later, he secured the Jubilee Hills ticket in both the 2018 and 2023 elections and won with successive victories. However, following the recent death of the Borabanda corporator, Maganti suffered severe emotional distress. During this period, he fell ill and passed away while receiving treatment at AIG Hospital.
Maganti’s death made a by-election in the Jubilee Hills Assembly seat inevitable. Being in opposition under BRS and with Congress in power, the competition between these two parties became intense. From the Maganti family, both Sunitha and her husband hoped to get the ticket. However, the leadership favored Sunitha. While there is a sentiment of sympathy toward Sunitha as the late MLA’s wife, another strategic thought is that giving the ticket to the deceased MLA’s wife may encourage other parties to step aside and allow her to be elected unanimously.
