BRS Working President K.T. Rama Rao strongly criticised the proposed “Telangana Hate Speech and Hate Crimes (Prevention) Bill”, calling it a dangerous tool aimed at suppressing democratic voices. In a statement released on Monday, he alleged that the government is attempting to silence critics by introducing such authoritarian legislation.
He expressed concern that if the bill becomes law, it would pose a serious threat to freedom of expression and democratic values guaranteed by the Constitution. While maintaining that social harmony is important, KTR pointed out that the provisions in the bill are vague and open to misuse. He warned that terms like “inciting dissent” and “harming social unity” lack clear legal definition and could be used to target opposition leaders, journalists, and activists, even branding criticism as fake news.
