Key EC Statement on Khairatabad Bypoll

A key development has emerged regarding the proposed Khairatabad Assembly by-election. P. Vijaya Reddy had filed an election petition in 2024 challenging the election of former MLA Danam Nagender, and the case remains pending before the Telangana High Court. Against this backdrop, she has approached the High Court seeking directions to prevent the issuance of the Khairatabad by-election notification until a final judgment is delivered in the pending election petition.

Following Danam Nagender’s disqualification, the Telangana Assembly issued a Gazette notification declaring the Khairatabad Assembly seat vacant. The Telangana High Court had disqualified Nagender, and the Supreme Court subsequently upheld the decision. The Telangana Chief Electoral Officer later informed the Election Commission of India about the vacancy. However, the Election Commission has not yet announced the by-election schedule. The High Court’s decision on the latest plea could affect the next steps in the election process.
