The Central Bureau of Investigation has intensified its investigation into the Karur stampede incident, which has triggered major political ripples in Tamil Nadu. As part of the probe, TVK chief and actor Vijay appeared before the CBI at its New Delhi headquarters on Monday, where he was questioned for nearly six and a half hours. Officials reportedly grilled him on multiple aspects related to the public meeting held in Karur, including crowd management, delay in arrival, safety arrangements, and the sequence of events leading to the tragic stampede.
The incident occurred on September 27, 2025, during Vijay’s public meeting in Karur, where permission was granted for only 10,000 attendees, but over 30,000 people reportedly gathered. A delay of nearly seven hours in Vijay’s arrival allegedly led to a sudden surge of supporters, resulting in a deadly stampede that claimed 41 lives, including children and women. With the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approaching, the CBI’s questioning of Vijay has gained political significance, drawing criticism from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, while Vijay’s supporters gathered outside the CBI office in solidarity. The agency has issued fresh notices asking Vijay to appear again on Tuesday, as it plans to cross-verify his statements with those of district officials already examined.
