Ahead of the scheduled re-polling in West Bengal’s Falta constituency on May 21, Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan announced his withdrawal from the contest. The Election Commission had earlier ordered re-polling in the constituency following allegations of irregularities during polling. Jahangir Khan stated that he would not contest any elections in the future and claimed that a special development package was being offered for Falta. He added that he wanted the constituency to progress peacefully without any violence or political unrest.
Reacting to the development, Trinamool Congress said the decision was entirely Jahangir Khan’s personal choice and had no connection with the party. The TMC alleged that more than 100 of its workers in Falta had been arrested since the declaration of results on May 4 and accused BJP leaders of attacking party offices. The party also alleged that complaints regarding intimidation, EVM irregularities, and missing CCTV footage were ignored by the Election Commission. Re-polling in the constituency is scheduled to take place on May 21.
