YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) chief and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy strongly condemned the reported attack on Rajampet MP and YSRCP parliamentary party leader PV Mithun Reddy in Punganur. Tensions escalated during the nomination process for local body elections after YSRCP candidates were allegedly obstructed and Mithun Reddy’s convoy was attacked. Several people reportedly sustained injuries in an attack involving stones and sticks, including Mithun Reddy and members of his security team. Some vehicles were damaged, and reports also emerged of vehicles being set on fire. Amid the tense situation, officials shifted Mithun Reddy to a separate room at the nomination centre. Meanwhile, YSRCP leaders alleged that the party office in Rayachoti was attacked and several vehicles were vandalised.
Reacting to the incidents, Jagan accused the Chandrababu Naidu-led government of encouraging political violence and misusing the police machinery. He alleged that the police remained passive while the attacks took place and expressed concern over the safety of opposition candidates during the election process. Jagan said his party would pursue legal remedies and bring the situation in the state to the attention of the courts. He also called for the deployment of central security forces to ensure peaceful elections. The YSRCP chief spoke to Mithun Reddy over the phone, enquired about his health and sought details of the incident. Further action by the authorities and their response to the allegations are awaited.
