A two-phase roadmap has been proposed for implementing simultaneous elections across India. In the first phase, elections to the Lok Sabha and nearly 20 state legislative assemblies are planned to be held together in 2029, marking a major structural shift in the electoral cycle.
In the second phase, the government aims to complete the nationwide unified election process by 2034. The proposal also includes adjustments in the tenure of various state assemblies, including extensions and curtailments where necessary. A Joint Parliamentary Committee is expected to submit its detailed report during the 2026 monsoon session.
