The central government is reportedly moving towards a significant decision to increase the number of seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies. The proposal aims to expand public representation across the country by increasing seats by nearly 50%.
According to the proposal, Lok Sabha seats are expected to rise from the current 543 to 816. Similarly, the number of assembly seats across states may increase from 4,123 to 6,185. State-wise changes are also anticipated, with Telangana’s assembly seats likely to increase to 179 and Andhra Pradesh’s to 263.
The bill related to this proposal is likely to be introduced during the current session of Parliament. The government is reportedly planning to implement these changes from the 2029 general elections. The decision has been conveyed to allied parties during an NDA meeting, according to sources.
