Former minister and BRS deputy floor leader T Harish Rao criticised the registration of police cases against farmers who protested demanding the release of irrigation water from the Jurala project. He said it was inappropriate to book farmers when their standing crops were drying up due to a lack of irrigation water. Police reportedly registered cases against 14 farmers after irrigation officials complained that they had released water into the Jurala canal without permission.
Harish Rao alleged that the Telangana government had failed to utilise available Krishna River water and was now using police cases instead of addressing farmers’ concerns. He said farmers across the state were facing difficulties over irrigation and power supply and demanded the immediate withdrawal of the cases registered against them. He also warned that the BRS would launch a larger agitation if what he termed anti-farmer actions continued.
