CPM Telangana state secretary John Wesley has levelled serious allegations against the Election Commission and the BJP. He alleged that eligible voters were being deleted in the name of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He blamed Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar for the alleged deletion of around 13 crore voter names and accused the BJP of acting against democratic rights. Wesley also demanded the withdrawal of the new rules introduced for voter applications.
Wesley announced protests at district headquarters and collectorates on October 6, followed by a demonstration outside Lok Bhavan in Hyderabad on October 8. He also announced a ‘Chalo Delhi’ programme on November 1. He demanded that the Chief Justice of India be included in the process of appointing the Chief Election Commissioner. Wesley said the agitation would continue until action is taken against Gyanesh Kumar. Recent reports also confirm that opposition parties have planned district-level protests on October 6, a Lok Bhavan march on October 8 and a ‘Chalo Delhi’ programme on November 1.
