Every political decision carries a hidden strategy - especially when it comes from a ruling party. Telangana Congress’ sudden move to elevate senior leader and former cricketer Mohammed Azharuddin to a ministerial position has sparked intense discussion in political circles. Although an official announcement is yet to come, party sources hint that Azharuddin might take oath within the next few days.
But the question is - why this sudden decision?
With the Jubilee Hills by-election and Bihar elections underway, the Congress seems focused on regaining minority votes. Analysts believe that bringing a nationally recognized minority leader like Azharuddin into the cabinet is a strategic move to bridge that gap and attract minority voters. Azharuddin is currently not a member of either the Assembly or the Legislative Council, having lost from Jubilee Hills in the 2023 elections. Yet, Congress appears to be prioritizing him for his symbolic and strategic importance. Currently, the Revanth Reddy cabinet has 15 ministers, though it can have up to 18. Despite two vacant positions, the immediate decision to include Azharuddin shows the party’s clear electoral intent. Constitutionally, there’s no issue - he can be sworn in now and be elected to the Legislative Council within six months. With three Council seats expected to fall vacant soon, Congress can easily accommodate him.
In short, the move seems less about governance and more about political calculation - a smart step by Congress to strengthen its minority support base ahead of crucial elections.
