BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad has strongly criticised Congress leader Sonia Gandhi over her conduct during the rendition of Vande Mataram at the Congress headquarters on August 15. He said the incident was objectionable and claimed that Sonia Gandhi appeared to oppose the complete rendition of the national song. He described the episode at the Congress office as disrespectful, given the significance of the national song.
Ravi Shankar Prasad also rejected the Congress media department’s explanation that the incident occurred because a chair was being arranged for party president Mallikarjun Kharge. He referred to a similar Congress event in Goa, where only two stanzas of Vande Mataram were reportedly sung. He questioned the Congress’ overall position on the song and said the party should not claim sole ownership of the legacy of India’s freedom movement if it continues with such an approach.
