Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced a major relief measure for the film industry by allowing theatres across the state to screen five shows per day for newly released films during their first week. Earlier, theatres were restricted to four daily shows under the Tamil Nadu Cinemas Regulation Rules, and an extra show required special permission from authorities. With the new policy, theatres can now automatically run a fifth show without separate approvals.
The decision will also apply to weekends, public holidays, dubbed films, re-releases and children’s films. The move comes after discussions between the Tamil Nadu government and film industry representatives over falling theatrical revenues due to OTT competition and piracy concerns. Producers, distributors, theatre owners and fans have welcomed the decision, calling it a major boost for the Tamil cinema business.
