The bill to grant legal status to Amaravati as the capital of Andhra Pradesh has been approved by both Houses of Parliament. The Rajya Sabha passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Amendment Bill 2026 through a voice vote, a day after it was unanimously approved in the Lok Sabha. The bill will now be sent to the President for final approval.
Once the President gives assent, Amaravati will officially become the permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh. This marks a historic milestone, as it is the first time the central government has granted legal status to a state capital. After creating history in 1953 as the first linguistic state, Andhra Pradesh is now set to become the first state to receive statutory recognition for its capital.
