Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has accused the United States of attempting to divide Canada and bring it under its control. Speaking at a campaign rally ahead of the October 19 referendum-related vote in Alberta, Carney urged residents to support the province remaining part of Canada. He warned that a vote favouring separation could trigger prolonged political uncertainty and deepen divisions. Describing the global environment as increasingly unstable, Carney said external forces were seeking to weaken Canada and gain greater influence over the country. His remarks come amid growing debate over Alberta’s political future and its relationship with the federal government.
Tensions between Canada and the United States have also been fuelled by trade disputes and US President Donald Trump’s previous remarks about making Canada the 51st American state. Carney has rejected such suggestions. Alberta, a major producer of oil and natural gas, plays a significant role in Canada’s economy. However, some residents argue that the province does not receive adequate political representation or financial support in return for its economic contribution. Disagreements over federal policies, economic disparities and political differences have strengthened the separatist movement. The upcoming vote is expected to gauge public support for legally initiating a process to separate Alberta from Canada.
