The name Jeffrey Epstein has been trending on social media over the past few days for multiple reasons. Epstein, an American financier, was the key figure in a massive sex scandal that shocked the United States. During the 1980s and 1990s, he was accused of luring girls from poor and middle-class backgrounds with money and abusing them at his residences in places like Florida, New York, the Virgin Islands and Mexico. This illegal activity reportedly continued for nearly two decades and came to light in 2005.
Epstein was arrested in 2005 and spent a few months in jail. In 2019, fresh allegations emerged during the MeToo movement, leading to his arrest once again. In August the same year, he died under suspicious circumstances inside jail. While authorities ruled it a suicide, doubts still remain. A year after his death, Netflix released a four-episode documentary titled Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich, directed by Lisa Bryant, based on his life and crimes.
Recently, with the Epstein files going viral again, this documentary - released six years ago - has returned to the trending list. The series shows how Epstein rose from a teacher to a powerful financier, details his sexual crimes, highlights the pain of the victims and explores the events that led to his death in jail. The mention of well-known names such as Bill Clinton, Elon Musk, Donald Trump and Bill Gates in the Epstein files has further fueled public discussion.
