Every person has a unique way of looking at life, but a filmmaker’s real talent lies in presenting an idea differently to the audience. ‘Double Occupancy’ is one such unusual family drama that grabs attention with its title itself. Written and directed by Ashwin Kandasamy, the film is produced by actress Khushbu Sundar.
The story revolves around Rajani, who has a rare birth condition. From 6 AM to 6 PM, Rajani lives as a woman, while after 6 PM, the same person transforms into a man. Her parents know about this condition from birth and raise her with great care. Interestingly, the daytime and nighttime versions of Rajani do not know what the other does. The only thing connecting them is a mobile phone that both of them use.
Their lives take a tragic turn when Rajani’s parents die in an unexpected accident during the day. When the nighttime Rajani learns about their death, he develops resentment toward the daytime Rajani, believing that he was not even allowed to see his parents for the last time.
From there, the story takes several unexpected turns. The biggest twist arrives when some criminals kidnap the daytime Rajani for a specific reason. However, Rajani does not transform into the nighttime version as expected. What happens next forms the suspenseful climax of ‘Double Occupancy’.
Although stories involving unusual identities and transformations have been explored before, director Ashwin Kandasamy presents this concept in a fresh and entertaining manner. The film is currently streaming on Prime Video and is also available in Telugu. With its comedy, emotion, family drama and surprising twists, ‘Double Occupancy’ offers an entertaining watch.
