1. The Well Dispute

Once, a poor farmer bought a well from a wealthy man so that he could use its water to irrigate his land. The farmer paid the price demanded by the wealthy man.

The next day, when the farmer tried to draw water from the well, the wealthy man stopped him. He said that the farmer had purchased only the well, not the water inside it. Therefore, he had no right to take water from the well.

Not knowing what to do, the farmer went to the royal court and explained his situation to Emperor Akbar.

Akbar assigned the matter to Birbal.

Akbar asked Birbal to help the poor farmer solve his problem.

Birbal met the wealthy man who was troubling the farmer. The wealthy man repeated what he had told the farmer.

Birbal said, "You sold the well but not the water. If you want to keep the water inside your well, you must pay rent to the farmer for storing it there."

The wealthy man realized that his trick would not work. He understood that he could not keep the water in the well without paying the farmer.

Finally, he allowed the farmer to use the water from the well.

2. Birbal's Khichdi

One winter day, Akbar and Birbal were walking beside a lake.

Akbar stopped, dipped his finger into the freezing water, and immediately pulled it out.

He said, "I don't think anyone could survive a whole night standing in this cold water."

Birbal took Akbar's words as a challenge and said that he would find someone who could do it.

Akbar announced that he would reward one thousand gold coins to anyone who could spend an entire night standing in the freezing lake.

Birbal brought a poor man who agreed to take the challenge in exchange for the reward.

Two guards watched the man throughout the night as he stood in the freezing water.

The next morning, the poor man was brought to the royal court to receive his reward.

Akbar asked him how he had managed to stand in the freezing water all night.

The man replied, "Your Majesty, I kept looking at a distant lamp throughout the night."

Akbar said, "You were able to stand in the lake because you received warmth from that lamp. Therefore, you are not eligible for the reward."

The poor man was deeply disappointed.

He approached Birbal for help.

The next day, Birbal did not attend the royal court.

Akbar went to Birbal's house to find out why.

There, he saw Birbal sitting beside a fire. A pot was hanging approximately six feet above the fire.

Akbar asked Birbal what he was doing.

Birbal replied, "I am cooking khichdi, Your Majesty."

Akbar started laughing and said that it was impossible.

Birbal replied, "It is possible, Your Majesty. If a poor man can stay warm by looking at a distant lamp, then I can cook this khichdi in the same way."

Akbar understood Birbal's point.

He realized that the poor man had been treated unfairly.

Akbar rewarded the poor man for completing the challenge.

3. Truth and Lies

One day, Emperor Akbar was sitting in his royal court.

A question suddenly came to his mind.

He looked around the court, and everyone remained silent, unable to understand what the emperor was thinking.

Akbar's voice echoed through the court.

"Can anyone explain the difference between truth and falsehood in just two or three words?"

No one came forward to answer the emperor's question.

The courtiers were afraid that whatever answer they gave might get them into trouble.

Therefore, they remained silent.

After some time, Akbar looked toward Birbal.

Birbal was also thinking about the answer to the emperor's question.

Akbar asked him, "Birbal, answer my question."

Birbal replied, "Your Majesty, the difference between truth and falsehood is the distance of four fingers."

Neither Akbar nor the other courtiers understood the meaning of Birbal's answer.

Akbar asked, "Birbal, explain your answer further."

Birbal replied, "Certainly, Your Majesty. The distance between our eyes and ears is approximately four fingers. Everyone knows this. If we hear something through our ears and it is false, what we see with our eyes can reveal the truth."

The entire court applauded.

Akbar was impressed by Birbal's intelligence.

He embraced Birbal and rewarded him with one thousand gold coins.

4. One Question

Stories about Birbal's extraordinary intelligence and wisdom had spread far and wide.

Once, a scholar visited Akbar's court with the intention of challenging Birbal's intelligence.

The scholar told the emperor that he was very intelligent and that even Birbal would not be able to answer his questions.

Akbar called Birbal to the court and explained what the scholar had said.

Birbal accepted the challenge.

The scholar asked Birbal,

"Would you like to answer one hundred easy questions, or would you prefer to answer one difficult question?"

Birbal replied that he would answer the difficult question.

The scholar then asked,

"Tell me, which came first: the chicken or the egg?"

Birbal thought for a moment and replied,

"The chicken came first."

The scholar mocked Birbal and asked,

"How can you be so certain?"

Birbal immediately replied,

"I promised to answer only one question. Therefore, I will not answer another question."

The scholar was embarrassed by Birbal's clever response and left the royal court.

5. Who Is the Thief?

One day, a wealthy merchant approached Birbal and complained that someone had stolen from his house.

He also told Birbal that he suspected one of his servants.

Birbal went to the merchant's house and gathered all the servants together.

He asked them who had stolen from the house.

As expected, none of them admitted to committing the theft.

Birbal thought of a clever way to identify the culprit.

He gave each servant a stick.

Birbal told them,

"Tomorrow morning, the stick belonging to the thief will grow two inches longer."

He explained that this would help the merchant identify the person who had stolen from his house.

The next morning, Birbal asked all the servants to bring their sticks.

He examined them carefully and identified the thief.

The thief had assumed that his stick would grow two inches overnight.

To avoid being caught, he had shortened his stick by two inches.

Birbal noticed the difference and identified the thief.

Thus, Birbal solved the mystery using his intelligence.

6. The Rooster

Once, Emperor Akbar decided to play a trick on his favorite minister, Birbal.

He told the other ministers that he wanted to play a small game with Birbal and asked them to help him.

According to the plan, all the ministers secretly brought an egg hidden in their clothes the next day.

That day, Akbar told the courtiers that he had experienced a dream.

According to his dream, all the ministers had to enter the royal pond and bring back one egg each.

Akbar said that anyone who brought an egg would prove their loyalty to him.

After explaining his dream, Akbar asked all the ministers to follow his instructions and demonstrate their loyalty.

As planned, the ministers pretended to search for eggs in the pond.

Each of them returned with an egg that had already been hidden inside their clothes.

Birbal continued searching for an egg but could not find one.

When Birbal returned empty-handed, everyone began mocking him and laughing at one another.

Birbal understood the entire trick.

He went before the king and loudly made the sounds of a rooster.

Akbar was surprised and asked Birbal why he was behaving like that.

Birbal replied,

"Your Majesty, I am not a hen, so I cannot bring you any eggs. But I am a rooster, and that is why I can crow loudly. This is my way of demonstrating my loyalty."

Everyone burst into laughter after hearing Birbal's answer.

7. The Number of Crows in Akbar's Kingdom

One morning, Akbar and Birbal were walking through the royal garden.

Akbar noticed some crows in the garden and began wondering how many crows lived in his kingdom.

He asked Birbal,

"How many crows can you find in my kingdom?"

Birbal thought for a moment and replied,

"There are ninety thousand two hundred and forty-nine crows in your kingdom, Your Majesty."

Akbar was surprised by Birbal's quick answer.

He asked,

"What if the number of crows is greater than the number you just mentioned?"

Birbal calmly replied,

"Then crows from neighboring kingdoms must have come into our kingdom."

Akbar then asked,

"What if the number is less than what you mentioned?"

Birbal replied,

"Then some of our crows must have gone on vacation to neighboring kingdoms."

Akbar was amused by Birbal's clever answer.

8. Who Is the King?

Once, Birbal was sent as an ambassador to another kingdom.

The king of that kingdom had also heard stories about Birbal's intelligence and wanted to test him.

The king instructed all his ministers to dress exactly like him.

They all wore identical clothes and sat on similar thrones in a row.

The king wanted to see whether Birbal could identify him among the ministers.

When Birbal entered the royal court, he was surprised to see everyone dressed alike and sitting on identical thrones.

He was confused.

Birbal carefully observed everyone for some time.

After examining them, he walked toward one person and bowed before him.

That person was the king.

The king was amazed by Birbal's intelligence.

He embraced Birbal and asked,

"How were you able to identify me?"

Birbal smiled and replied,

"Your Majesty, nobody else here appeared as confident as you. I also noticed that everyone else seemed to be waiting for your approval."

The king was impressed by Birbal's intelligence and could not help praising him.

9. Akbar's Ring

Once, Akbar lost a ring that his father had given him as a gift.

He immediately went to Birbal and asked for his help.

Birbal promised to help him find the ring.

He then told the courtiers that he knew one of them had stolen the king's ring.

Akbar became angry and asked,

"Who among you has stolen my ring?"

Birbal replied,

"Your Majesty, the person who has grass in his beard is the one who has your ring."

Akbar asked Birbal to help him recover the stolen ring.

Immediately, the guilty courtier began removing the grass from his beard and brushing it off.

Birbal pointed toward him and told Akbar that he was the culprit.

Thus, Birbal identified the thief through his clever observation.

10. The Mango Tree

Once, two brothers named Ram and Shyam were fighting over ownership of a mango tree.

Ram claimed that the tree belonged to him.

Shyam also claimed that it belonged to him.

Unable to resolve their dispute, they decided to approach Birbal for help.

Birbal carefully examined the situation.

He instructed the brothers to remove all the mangoes from the tree and divide them equally.

Then he told them to cut the tree into two equal parts.

After hearing Birbal's instructions, Ram agreed.

However, Shyam pleaded with Birbal not to cut the tree.

He explained that he had been taking care of the tree for the past three years.

Birbal understood who the real owner was.

He declared,

"The tree belongs to Shyam because the thought of cutting it down has upset him. Anyone who has taken care of a tree for three years would not immediately agree to destroy it."

Birbal gave his judgment, identifying Shyam as the rightful owner of the mango tree.

11. A Pot Full of Intelligence

Once, Akbar became angry with Birbal and banished him from his kingdom.

Birbal went to a distant village, adopted a new identity, and began working as a farmer.

After a few weeks, Akbar started missing Birbal.

He ordered his soldiers to find Birbal and bring him back to the kingdom.

The soldiers searched from one end of the kingdom to the other, but they could not find him.

Akbar then came up with an idea.

He sent a message throughout the kingdom, instructing every village chief to send him a pot filled with intelligence.

He announced that anyone who could not send a pot filled with intelligence could instead fill the pot with gold and diamonds and send it to him.

Akbar believed this was the only way to bring Birbal back to the capital.

The villagers began wondering how they could fill a pot with intelligence.

They were confused and did not know what to do.

Birbal came forward to help them.

He found a clever way to fulfill the king's request.

He planted a small watermelon in a pot without separating it from its vine.

He watered the plant every day and allowed the watermelon to grow until it filled the entire pot.

Birbal then separated the watermelon from the vine and sent the pot to the king.

Along with the pot, he sent a message:

"Your Majesty, if you can remove the watermelon from the pot without cutting it, you will find intelligence inside."

Akbar realized that only Birbal could have sent such a clever solution.

He personally went to the village and brought Birbal back to the capital.

12. The Gold Coin and Justice

One day, as usual, Akbar asked Birbal a question.

"My dear Birbal, if I asked you to choose between justice and a gold coin, which would you choose?"

Without taking much time to answer, Birbal replied,

"Your Majesty, I would choose the gold coin without any hesitation."

Everyone, including Akbar, was surprised by Birbal's immediate response.

They thought that Birbal had finally made a mistake.

Akbar said,

"I am very disappointed in you. Why did you choose something as insignificant as a gold coin over something as valuable as justice?"

Birbal smiled and replied,

"Your Majesty, justice is available everywhere in your kingdom. There is no shortage of justice here. Therefore, I do not need to ask for something that is already available in abundance.

"But, Your Majesty, I will certainly need money. That is why I chose the gold coin."

After hearing Birbal's answer, Akbar was speechless.

However, a big smile appeared on his face.

He was very pleased with Birbal's response and rewarded him with one hundred gold coins.
